Why do 5G/4G towers need to be everywhere?

My city has big 5G/4G towers everywhere. How do they determine how far apart they need to be? If you can see the tower does that mean you can get reception? My city has hills all around that large parts of the city have a straight view of, why can't they put a few towers on the hills like they do radio towers instead of placing them all around town where buildings and trees eventually block them out? How far does the signal go before it doesn't work, assuming there's nothing in the way? I'm not a math or science person, I'm just wondering because the towers are so fucking ugly and everywhere and still going up in lots of spots. A few of them get disguised as trees but only in a couple spots, they are just huge eye sores. Also I don't know if it's 5G or 4G that's in the picture, but that's what has popped up all over town in the last couple years, there's like 50 at least. Also if that is 4G and not 5G, why do we need them? I've already had 4G on my phone for years before these towers?

Thanks
