frankly, making friends and being popular is pretty arbitrary. I've always been kind of awkward, but it's always been "charming awkward" - there's not a real difference, just people's perception.
If you try and be nice, helpful, and are willing to at least interact with other people, you'll end up making at least a couple decent friends.
any more or less than that is pretty much a crapshoot. I've been lucky in my life, maybe you will be too
