If you catch it early while it's still a localized tumor you can survive pretty well, but once it metasticizes youre pretty much dead meat. It's nearly impossible to cure because of the genetic heterogeneity of tumors. Even if you almost completely wipe it out, small pockets of genetically different cells will often survive and lead to recurrence, and these cells will be immune to previous treatments. Basically a miniature natural selection. I wish your friend the best of luck but unless he's incredibly lucky and his immune system decides to recognize the cancer and kill it like it should be doing he's probably a goner.
