yeah that's a cross product then. But if you're missing the k component it's not possible to do one. You aren't telling us critical information. Are the vectors normalized, in that case you can easily get the k component. Or is the problem only asking for the k-component of the cross product vector, in that case you can get it.

Just distribute and remember that i*j=k, j*i=-k, i*i=0, j*j = 0. Hence, (a*i+b*j)*(c*i +d*j)=ac(i*i)+ad(i*j)+bc(j*i)+bd(j*j)=(ad-bc)*k
