Is ascorbic acid (vitamin C) stable in water?

Anyone good with chemistry?

I bought ascorbic acid powder to add to my drinking water (a 2L/ half gallon jug I fill every morning) but is it all degrading after an hour? After a day? (sometimes I don't drink it all in one day for example)

Would be nice to know if I'm completely wasting my money by adding it my jug and should instead be adding smaller doses to my cup or what - though that'd create another problem of having to open the storage container much more often which would probably degrade the powder even more by exposing it to more movement / air/ light.

I did search for some sort of vacuum powder dispenser to solve this issue and no such product seems to exist.

Put all the powder in a glass and drink that in the morning. Or just get them as pills. 1 g is also the max daily amount so you dont propably need that much.

I didn't read any of these articles, just did a quick search on google. However given that in distilled water it usually on lasts 1 hour, according to the quote from that second link, I'd say it's better if you just drank all of it once in a cup!

get a UV spec and take samples at various intervals, measure light absorbance of ascorbic acid (lambda max is between 289.0 and 295.4 depending on solution pH) and determine if concentration is decreasing over time

you cant just determine something like that in your head if no one has done the experiment to generate the data

This could be a solution but one of the reasons I add it to my tap water (in the jug) is that ascorbic acid completely neutralises chlorine & has natural purifying factors when added to water such as being naturally antibacterial/ antimicrobial. Of course I could get the best of both worlds by just both having 500mg-1g in a cup in the morning and continuing to add 1g to my jug.

Yeah this was one of the articles I found in my searches but it just mentions 'ascorbic acid is stable for more than an hour' and doesn't specify how unstable it becomes after that. For example if 0.5% of it is being oxidized every hour after the first then that wouldn't be a problem for me, but if it's a much larger rate of decay then obviously that would be problematic.

Iodometric Titration could be the way to go. It doesn't need to be precise, because you just want to validate if there is a decay of ascorbic acid in general.
KI (potassium iodide) and KIO3 (potassium iodate) can be purchased online in small quantities. HCl (muriatic acid) you can get in a hardware store. Corn starch from a supermarket and you're good to go. Should be around 20-25 $.
