Why is human evolution so... linear? I mean I'm not doubting its validity but I've always found it very much "targeted" for being a random development.

I'm over.simplifying, of course but this is basically human evolution. My question is, why it never went to totally different direction, like three arms, only one big lung, 10 fingers per hand or things like these?
