I don’t want to sound wanky, but I used to feel like that, I liked being around people, but I never felt enough of a connection with them to make me feel like I was actually a real person like they were. Turns out that I was fairly smart but didn’t realize it, so the people around me just weren’t providing enough of a context for me to relate to and feel part of. Once I realized I was smarter than average I was able to get an understanding of my disconnect and start building relationships by learning how to relate on their level. It sounds conceited but it’s not, I genuinely value the people around me and learning how to bridge the gap has been a gift.

So my interpretation is that if you aren’t around enough people like yourself, you have no mirror to see yourself reflected in, and you fall into the role of an isolated disinterested observer. Your personality can’t grow because you’re not getting any meaningful impersonal input that lights the fire, coaxes you out of your shell and challenges you. Everyone needs fertiliser for the soul, and for some it’s much harder to find than for others.

I don't think it's the same.

We all feel that we are not like others, because we are the only person that we are actually experiencing fully.
Most persons feel they are smarter than others. And I was the same.
I felt I was smarter because I used to have really good grades, I used to understand things more easily, I was more understanding, I used to question myself and my behaviors a lot, I was calm etc... I even thought arrogantly that I was superior to others.
But now, I don't think I am really different, I think the average person evolve just differently according to their environnement. I don't think we evolve freely during our life.

But what the OP is expressing seems different for me. Even if you are "smarter" and can't realate to others, you should feel having your own identity, your own mindset, your own story etc...
