You're talking about imbibing a chemical that both decreases the excitation chemicals and increases the relaxation chemicals in your brain, for studying. You really want something that will have all cylinders in your brain firing at full capacity. Beer is only nice when you're working on something that has already become mentally menial to you so an altered mental state doesn't really affect your performance. But why drink when you could do your mentally menial tasks while at the same time thinking about something you study? I'd bet that would help memory retention a lot more than beer.
