My engineering math Prof said that there's no such thing as a dimension higher than the third dimension. He said, using his actual words, "it's a bunch of bullshit, there is no fourth or fifth dimension". Is he right?

Time is a made up mathematical parameter to describe the change in position of objects moment to moment. No "time" actually moves: an object is just here one instant and over there the next instant. It isn't a dimension. We only care about it because we expire.

Well he's following Aristotle's empiricism first of all which is already a mistake. But even if he is he has applied the principles incorrectly. He has ignored the work of relativity without any counter claim. Regardless Aristotle is a mistake, Plato was correct to say that our ideas are just as real as what we observe empirically. The quantum theory has shown this time and time again specifically in the time delayed quantum eraser, Bell's theorem, and even the standard double slit experiment itself. Therefore, your teacher is wrong in both systems of thought.

If he meant there's no more than 3 spatial dimensions, then yes, hes correct. Using time to make a 4th dimension doesn't really mean much. You can take any number of variables and define any N dimensional space.

Do not look at things in spacial terms, only the third dimension is spacial. Look at it in degrees of freedom.

1st dimension- exists

2 dimension- forward backward up down

3rd dimension (space) - forward backward up down left right

4th dimension (time) - forward backward up down left right AND forward and backward through time

or something like that.

I recommend looking into Michio Kaku’s book “Hyperspace,” or at least the concepts discussed. In it he discusses the origins of quantum physics and numerous related early tests on stuff such as proton decay, yet what is most important is the discussion of visualizing higher dimensions; i.e. the flatlander analogy and hypercubes/hyperspheres. Essentially the 4th dimension is changing a whole object’s volume as if it were height, width, or length. I never finished the whole book because I got busy with other things and forgot about it, yet he also goes into the theories of 21 dimensions (essentially the currently accepted mathematically based theories that are disgusting looking, complicated, yet make math work), string theory (very “pretty” but currently not much traction), and some more obscure ones.
