The earliest mathematicians I understand had to wrestle with the number zero's existence. When they figured it does exist they moved onto higher numbers, trying to get higher and higher until infinity is found.
There was a break through I believe with Graham's number, which is a pretty big number. But mathematicians have since found numbers that could be larger than this, sometimes by hundreds or thousands.
Infinity is a "number of the gaps" and we only give it a name because we haven't figured it out yet. It doesn't actually exist. Given the progress of increasingly massive numbers being discovered all the time I suspect it's only a matter of time before we discover infinity. I'd give it 20 year tops. We will get there, hence the need for mathematicians to push out into the gap and discover it so we're not believing in some nonsensical weird concept.
