The total derivative give a hypersurface approximating the function at a certain point.
The partial derivative approximates the function linearly in the direction of a coordinate line.
I get the hypersurface part, that's kinda universal. But the coordinate line is basically arbitrary. I can choose different coordinate systems and get different answers. Not sure what to make of that.
