the electrical potential a toaster uses comes in one wire, travels through the heating coils that toast your bread, and goes back into the wall. when you drop a toaster in a bathtub, it can be easier for the electricity to move through the water to the drainpipe and to ground through the metal pipes than it is to move through the heating coils. If so, a person in the bathtub gets zapped, unless they have plastic drainpipes, in which case the electricity moves through the water around the heating coil and back into the wire and goes back into the wall, popping the breaker but not killing the fat lardo who eats toast in the bathtub.
