Randomly will get you nowhere. Choose a high level subject and work at it. In trying to fully understand that subject, you'll eventually be led to important truths that will come together to form your generalized understanding. To get there you need to have a solid foundational starting point.
For me, this was chemistry because that was my initial interest, but I was unsatisfied with my understanding of things until I started to learn more about physics, electricity, magnetism, and biology, and now at this point I don't consider chemistry my main interest. It will still always have a special place as my starting point though.
For it to work, you have to really get into it. If you just browse articles then you'll only have a topical understanding. If you want that understanding to evolve, you need to properly study the subject, though you can still use articles/wikipedia browsing on the side as a supplement.
