if science is so good and technology and medicine made our lives so much better and longer, why is everyone so mad all the time and why are suicide and mental illness so common and why are people constantly complaining about virtually every aspect of modern life and society?

because back then when you had to worry about being eaten by wolves, all your other problems felt small in comparison. In the same way that a third world, starving child can theoretically feel the same exact amount of human suffering as an heiress who didn't get the right brand of helicopter for her birthday, "pain" is relative and will always adjust to encompass the most immediate problems a person has. I don't understand why this is such a hard concept for people like you to grasp.

Copper deficiency causes dopamine to accumulate in the body. You vastly overestimate how much of an impact religion had on people's lives. Exactly as much of the population as today grapples with existential questions, that is to say not very many. Nihilism is a boogeyman, 99.9% of people don't care about the meaning of life.
