In order to do that the costs, downsides, and risks of surgery need to be drastically lower. In order to keep costs low we need to drastically reduce the amount of labor required. Such drastic reductions in human labor cannot come from the field of medicine. We're going to need something much better than cutting people with knives or a process for replacing/regrowing body parts in whole, both of which will also require advancements outside of the field of medicine. I also think we need to be much better at basic processes. We may need some specific set of proteins to grow replacement body parts, but while it can be cheap to grow proteins, the process of purifying those proteins is very expensive.
