Hydrogen is a shitty fuel, for several reasons. Hydrogen requires entirely new infrastructure, and building a H2 station costs several million dollars. Setting up a bank of fast chargers (like a Tesla Supercharger station) costs only a few hundred thousand. And there are a lot more zoning & safety rules needed with hydrogen stations, while you can basically put chargers anywhere. And most people can charge overnight at home, so only enough fast chargers are needed to cover long distance trips & apartment dwellers, while you would have to build enough H2 stations to cover everyone.
Secondly, H2 has very poor real-world energy density, when you include the bulky tanks needed to contain it. A Toyota Mirai weighs more than a Tesla Model 3 (RWD, LR version) and has slightly less range. And batteries are getting better, while storage tanks are not.
And H2 is an expensive fuel. Right now the few stations in CA sell it for $14 to $16 a kg; that means a mid-sized fuel cell sedan costs more than 20 cents per mile to fuel; a plain gas Camry is like 8 cents a mile, and a Tesla Model 3 less than 4 cents. (Assuming average US fuel & electric prices). And that is with steam-reformed methane derived H2, the cheapest way to currently make it.
Note that creating a kg of H2 that way creates about 14 kg of CO2. So a Toyota Mirai driving its full 312 mile range creates ~70 kg of CO2. In comparison, well to wheel a gallon of gas creates 11 kg of CO2; a 50 mpg car like the Prius thus creates ~69 kg to travel the same distance. The US grid creates ~ 0.62 kg of CO2 per kw-hr, so a Tesla Model 3 creates ~45 kg of CO2 to travel that distance.
Of course you can make H2 using renewable energy & water, but that process ends up being expensive & inefficient; it costs more than the already expensive methane derived H2, and between the electrolysis & compression losses, you could take the same amount of electricity and get an BEV to travel 2-3 times as far.
