Actually, it might be related to how much attention someone gets for being sick. My parents completely ignored me, and I'm the sort of person to hide any sort of sickness. Meanwhile, others can use it to get affection and to get out of doing work.
The idea that it's specific to men is bullshit though. Women bitch about everything. You would get called a sexist if you said it was specific to women.
