With regards to spin, you absolutely have to have some mathematical maturity in order to understand this. There is no way around it, unfortunately. It is too unintuitive otherwise.
Spin is very tightly linked to rotations as it arises naturally from representations of the rotational group. It can be illustrated using shit like the Dirac plate trick or whatever it's called, but it will still be magic until you dig into maths.
As for particles, spin arises naturally in classical (not quantum) field theory. When you consider homogenous Lorentz transformations and explore what Noether current density is associated with such trasformations for a Lagrangian density, you get total angular momentum which comprises well-known orbital momentum that is easily interpreted but also another term which is called spin angular momentum. This term is exactly what arises in QM/QFT after the correspondance principle via canonical commutators is applied.
