It's very dry material, contrary to what you might expect from something as visual as graphics, and modern paradigms means it's even drying than normal (fixed function pipeline and consoles means you just flip a bit to get something onscreen with the effects you want, whereas nowadays you program the effects yourself, too, even the most basic, and without that you get nothing rendered).
