Am I a brainlet, or is this a total misapplication of the science of statistics?
The team you just gave a ~94% of winning didn’t win.
I understand that they’re saying “938 times out of 1,000 the Niners will win” but what does that even mean?
There’s only one game and there will never be 1,000 games.
Do you see what I’m getting at?
I’m sure you could find this type of prediction outside of sports, so this isn’t a thread about sports, but I think it makes the best example of what I’m thinking about.
So, do statistical predictions like this actually mean anything? I lean towards no. It seems like pseudo-statistics.
