We'd talk about concepts like bridge points to alternate universes, gateways, or waking up in an alternate reality where there are details which are ever so slightly different. The idea of ancient civilizations, and the possibility of early man encountering, being visited by, or living amidst another species, were not off the table either. He also did radio communications, mountaineering, and cold weather warfare in the Army, and probably I picked up a mechanical, systematic way of looking at the human body relative to environment. The basic things like don't eat snow, you'll net lower your core temp and may never recover the calories required to heat it. instead pack a canteen and carry it in your coat. Getting your feet wet can be a death sentence, if you're going up a slope with the sun on you don't exert enough to trigger a sweat response, because it'll be cold on the colder side and you won't dry. The behavior of lightning and where to go, etc. Unfortunately we never really talked about the radio aspect.
So I guess naturally I gravitated towards electronics and biological systems. The other thing which gets me into things is honestly, when people piss me off. Nothing gets me into something like doing better than some asshole who's clearly arrogantly ignorant, wrong, and I need to build a structure that puts the world back in order by the proof of its mere existence. That's been a driving force, at least when I was younger, I don't really care anymore. Health problems got me into biology and medicine. Waiting on people to provide builds of x264 got me to get toolchain to build it, then I wanted to modify and so I learned to program, etc.
Coming from my childhood, the way other people function is completely alien. I don't like discussing science.
