As I see it, IQ in most cases gives you a rough estimate of how much effort you'll have to put into learning and maybe how quickly you'll progress.
Let's assume your IQ actually is 115. You can still be successful in STEM fields, but you will probably have to put more effort into your education and it might take you a bit longer. People with an IQ of 100 can still be successful, but it will probably take them even longer and they'll have to work harder for it. In contrast, someone with an IQ of 130 will probably be able to put in less effort and will advance faster.
This is admittedly a bit of an oversimplification and may not be accurate in all cases. If, for example, you have an IQ of 140 but you get three hours of sleep a night and have severe depression, you're probably going to come up short compared to almost everyone else.
