Do you think graduate school, then a "knowledge worker" career (in academia or the private sector) is the only option for intelligent individuals to feel fulfilled in life?
Is it possible for an intelligent or gifted individual to lead a fulfilling life while squandering their potential?

I think the idea that being intelligent gives you some sort of obligation, or even duty, to pursue excellence in fields that are conventionally considered to be intellectually challenging is a very common thing and has been for a long time. So I figured that there was some truth to the claim that pursuing anything else would equate to squandering potential and choosing mediocrity.

I'm no genious but I get bored in most jobs because they aren't challenging enough. I'm hoping to find forfilment as a self employed inventor, entering mech eng. next year so I can legally design and produce load bearing machines.

Personally I find the average at best intelligence of the people at the top of most hierarchies frustrates me making self-employment the only real option. In life inteligence won't get you to the top, charisma will.

So I'll tell you this. You have a belief which is limiting you from your potential, as well as societal long term gain. Just because you've felt this concept over and over reinforced doesn't mean it is true, granted, societal expectations are a good pointer in what is worthwhile. But when it comes to transcendent ideals, societal expectations are more lika crabs in a bucket. You need to be guided by beauty, by what you intuitively recognize as the more self-realizing path for you.

Did Shakespeare and Mozart squander their potential? Walking the path that others already walked before them, that would've been the squandering. Luckily, we benefit from their work today. Don't follow convention, if the convention is chosen by those who have less refined values.

The only reason people are required to go to college is because you need a reputation for people to take you seriously. Of course not that this is bad, as in many fields you need at least some formal schooling to understand the material. However if you are confident in your ability, but have no degree, then all you have to do is prove your ability. Keep in mind people want a degree from you so they know you are not lying about your knowledge. However if you were to prove with personal accomplishments, such as starting a viable business in the field, that you know what you are talking about and have something to offer, then people will take you seriously wether they want to or not.

I became a teacher and I am infinitely happier and make more money than my academic former classmates, plus something about interacting with young adults brings me peace. So yes to that question.

Probably not.
Intelligence is the ability to create new thoughts, knowledge and ideas from existing knowledge or insight but this also seems to come with a drive to explore new concepts. I see what you write about obligation, but the drive is a different thing.

Hard work is a good substitute for sheer brilliance that can take you really far. Yet the drive is very often missing.
