If there any reason why wars wouldn't be fought by hurling rocks at near light speed into their planets? Is there any way to prevent this?

Is there any reason why a sufficiently advanced alien civilization wouldn't just create a self-replicating robot that travels from star system to star system and anonymously annihilates every other spacefaring race it encounters in this way?

there is also a possibility that communication efforts between the species will fail (seeing how we can't communicate meaningfully even with our own animals) and they would just leave us. it is very likely that killing a species on a small remote planet wouldn't be a very fun way to use your weapons. but it is also very likely that even if they were an interstellar civilization, they would never run into anything too significant while colonizing the galaxy since the universe is so vast. this would mean that they have no need to kill anybody.

It's not so much a matter of fun as the most logical self-defense method possible. Given that both sides are capable of annihilating the other and whoever strikes first achieves victory, the only solution is to annihilate anything you come across from the shadows before it detects you.

Exponential growth.

A species has one homeworld. It spreads to another. Each of these colonies spreads to another each. Repeat. Eventually, you have colonized the entire inhabitable galaxy in a few hundred-thousand years even at sublight speeds and with human-like breeding qualities.

This assumes of course that the species is stable enough politically to survive without collapsing in on itself but if they reached the point where they have mastered spaceflight then perhaps social darwinism has eradicated all individuals and ideologies that are contrary to their mission by this point in their history.

there is also a chance that they only grow inside their own star system and decide that they have enough on their table. they could also live in a large planet in which the gravitational force does not allow them to leave their atmosphere. humans might also like the idea of exponential growth, but i think even we would decide that the billionth planet is already enough and this galaxy has nothing else for us.

game theory indicates that if there's even a small chance that life out there is hostile to a species, that species needs to act to wipe it out with relativistic weapons as soon as it's detected
