Evolutionarily, why is there such a big asymmetry between males and females among almost all animals? Why aren't we all hermaphrodites? As far as I know, it began symmetrically, so where and why did it break? It seems to me that it would be easier in terms of evolution for all of us to be hermaphrodites, because then evolution wouldn't have to account for the radically different gender roles.
