Young's double slit experiment was the cornerstone in establishing light as a wave. Quantum mechanics did not eliminate or backseat the wave nature of light. Instead, it discretized the possible energy states in each wave mode. Interference effects are a property of waves, not particles. Particle-ness is emergent from discretization, but the underlying wave mechanics is fundamental.
