daily reminder that the Soviet Union was a very favorable environment for the advancement and proliferation of science, resulting among other things in the Sputnik launch and many results in mathematical analysis. The sole reason why the US pushed for "new math" in schools and better funding for science in the mid 20th century was because they feared their world hegemony would be broken.
