I think it really depends on what sort of mental illnesses we are talking about, but it's safe to assume most problems arise from childhood. My mom came from a rough childhood and all her siblings very close in age have different problems. My aunt is a narcissist, my other aunt is overweight with extreme anxiety, my uncle is drunk and emotionally abusive and it wouldn't surprise me if he has hit one of his girlfriends. There are biological functions that manifest the mental illness... probably something like dark triad traits come from a very bad early childhood. Your brain goes through someone called brain remodeling and children are having this a lot, they are creating new wiring, and if you are in a constant hormonal state of stress, probably that has something to do with the development of mental illness.
So that being said, with everything humans are being a biological function, why would something that's purely intelligence have a biological impairment? Wouldn't that be like wondering if it can get tired make judgment errors?
