I do share you disappointment with imperative programming. However, I do still think it's a valid base for all programming. After all, alert("Hello world") is technically imperative, since there is not visible exposing of the underlying object. But that is just a stupid example.
Personally, as I told the OP, functional programming is hella important. It was one of the biggest things that shaped my career in CS. That being said, I disagree of it being taught as first thing for newcommers. On my school, it was used as filter. Because it is applied math, and it is taught as such.
The only programming subjects we had during our first two semesters were Haskell and voluntary Pascal. And it fucking shows.
We can argue about validity of functional programming as much as we want, but for majority of people I know, it was an artificial filter to get them off the school (because of how socialized education works).
Haskell is great. Teching it first is not.
I detest javascript, but I am a fan of F12->Console->alert("Hello world").
Results first. Then optimize.
Sorry for sounding abrasive. I'm now in Australia. It's 35°C here. I have had a few "coolants". My thinking is not what it was at the beginning of this thread.
