A: the universe is uncaring.
B: the universe is part of humans, and we are part of it. the matter composing humans is not special, privileged or different relative to any other matter.
contradiction: humans care about things. therefore, given we accept B, A is false.
C: human beliefs, superstitions, traditions, etc are not significant. only cosmic events are significant. ("cosmic" is left vague.)
D: only material phenomena that can be measured have legitimacy.
contradiction: "significance" as it is used in this context is a solely subjective experience. it isn't a property of any object in the world and no objective measure of it is possible. it is a phenomenon both created and experienced entirely and solely within sapient minds. therefore, if we decide a thing is significant, it is.
