From what I understand, science shows that the space in between galaxies is expanding at such a rate that they are moving away from one another faster than the speed of light, eventually leading to the heat death of the universe as a whole. My question, then, is of the uniformity of it all. Is this a phenomena that occurs uniformly throughout the universe, or in specific smaller packets of space? It seems to be the latter when expressed, but why?
