Picking mushrooms is quite popular where I live, it's common knowledge that certain mushrooms prefer neighbourhood of certain trees.
We've been taught that process of mycorrhiza is kind of symbiosis that provides mushrooms with organic matter produced by tree, while tree receives elements it cannot produce by itself, along with growth boosting hormones and general resistance of a tree.
It's estimated that 85% of trees is capable of mycohhriza. It got me thinking, how exactly did it happen in terms of evolution.
Both mushroom and tree would need certain biological drivers to get into mutually beneficial partnership, did two mutations happened randomly at one time frame in two organisms - tree and shroom, in the same pace on earth and proved itself so successful that it spread to all corners of earth or is it something completely different?
