What is a "simple" matter of recognizing patterns in the data collected by the telescopes? Or were the computers trained to recognize a specific pattern? If so, how did they ensure that the produced image is not heavily biased towards an expected result?

I'm very sceptical of the validity of the results but I would happily be convinced otherwise.
