Does anyone here actually feel guilty about using Sci-Hub? I don't even think professors/Universities care about it anymore. I am worried though that publishing standards and information will essentially cease once the profit incentive is gone.

The well established ones, maybe. But journals are actually needed to check what experiments are legit, otherwise you'll end up with Theranos x10000. Journals are needed.

what profit? Noone profits from journals except the journals. The only reason they were useful in the past is because the internet wasn’t widely spread and it was hard to reach your audience with neat papers.
Now it is very easy to find information on your research topic. The additional paywall from publishing agencies serve no purpose anymore besides paying for themselves. It is an unnecessary barrier for the process of science.

you'd have to first understand how consortia work to understand how standards work, but TL;DR: the 1000 bucks you pay for an ISO pdf isn't part of any profit model, it's literally a gatekeeping fee. the consortium members get the documents for free.

gatekeeping fees were implemented for historical reasons (i.e. don't let plebs into the library, they'll just shit in the aisles and wipe their asses with the books) but with the corporate open source movements they're becoming obsolete.

When I was an undergrad at a poorly funded school I tried doing things the "right" way. Only using old articles from the library (before 2004), stuff we had access too (mostly elsevier shit), and waiting for interlibrary loans.

Needless to say, I accomplished nothing and wasted my stipend. The shame still haunts me to this day.

Professors tell us to use Interlibrary loan but I can't wait a few days to eventually find out it's shit and not useful

Sites like Libgen I'll download some textbooks, but if I really like the book or need it down the line, I'll buy a physical copy because I find it easier to flip back and forth. I actually do feel bad about stealing textbooks but the price is very high for many of them. I'll buy some smaller/older books if they're only like 50 dollars

Why? Authors rarely get royalties, they are paid a lump sum at the outset. Any money you pay to buy a textbook just goes to (((publishers))).

This is increasingly the case, especially as the number of authors increases to cut costs ("microauthoring").

The fuck am I reading. Authors PAY to get published, not the other way around. Reviewers DON'T EVEN GET PAID EVER. Consumers pay as well. The only people getting paid are the editorial staff, period.
Also the fee that authors pay is downright insane at legit journals, making it impossible if you're not with a well-funded group to properly publish.

Elsevier does have a few good publications but you're right that most of them suck ass.

"non-profit" just means that they can pay themselves 100% of the operational profit at the end of the year, as opposed to investing it in the company (e.g. hiring people) like other kinds of companies are required to. It's the most predatory kind of company in the world and you should always steer clear of non-profits.
