You agree length is real and time is real, correct? These are just universal dimensions. Even before Einstein, time was considered to be a dimension, but it was also considered to be exactly the same at all points in the universe, so there was no need to think about it when describing an object's location (1 second is 1 second everywhere). Einstein of course showed this wasn't the case. Now time has to be considered when fully describing an object's position in the universe, ergo we get space-time.

Subatomic particles behave in a such strange and unintuitive way that we have no decent analogies that can properly explain what's going on. Analogies are fun and easy to understand, but don't take them to be rigorous truth.
