What percentage of scientists would you say just pretend to understand the higher, more in-depth or nuanced concepts of their field? Even you with absolute faith in the science structure must admit there are people who can and would "fake it til you make it" so to speak. Some people may do this in every aspect of their life and may not even be aware of it, via selectively just forgetting their every failure such that they operate under the continuous delusion that they have an understanding, and are competent and successful.

It is not possible to know how many of our failings we forget, or anything we forget for that matter, short of a memento-tier situation. It's possible you're the know-nothing scientist, and you don't even know it. o:
