1. Present some generic versions of the problems related to the project I am working on and ask how they would go about beginning to solve them.
2. Try to get an idea of work they have done outside of a school setting. If someone only does/has done work with really rigid structure that isn't going to cut it.
3. Get some general idea of their proficiency with related tools (whether it be different languages, industry standard programs, etc.) and figure out how they learned them.
Those are the things that are the best qualities for joining my team has an intern - quick learner, self motivated, solves problems without guidance and actually does so because they like to, not because it's part of their Uni program. Those skills will get you a long ways anywhere.
