I'm in China and there were some attempts to lean on people early on but that's well and truly over. They weren't jailed, just told to "stop spreading rumors" and their posts deleted. It's believed that this cover-up was the reason for the mayor being put under house-arrest though that could be another rumor itself.
The government made a national announcement that coverups were going to be punished, their exact phrase was "anyone who withheld information would face severe punishment and be 'nailed on the pillar of shame for eternity'."
https://www.scmp.com/news/china/politics/article/3046984/china-warns-cadres-cover-spread-virus-and-be-nailed-pillarThe hosing down streets with disinfectant is real, they're not trucks, more like mini street-sweeper vans, that might actually be what they are. I don't know what city, I assume Wuhan, but there was video going around of them cruising along in the very early morning spraying some white stuff over the sidewalks. Pretty hard to cover something up if it's done in public city-wide.
And we both know that people aren't dropping dead in the streets from this, they're getting bad fevers and dying in hospital beds of renal failure.
