It's impossible to go from 0 (nothing) to 1 without considering instanteneous generation (an addition). Do you believe in instantaneous generation? Then the uniserse is eternal. It always has been 1, just one. And things only transform into another thing.

Whether it came from nothing or always existed, neither explanation makes sense to me. Everything but the nature of existence has a causal explanation.

That doesn't mean it isn't the case that existence is just the default state, but to me it just sounds like a human rationalization that just makes more sense than creation by avoiding the turtles.

In general, we seem able to say little about why the universe works the way it does, only describing what it does and building from that. Maybe that means there's nothing else to it, it just is how it is.

I'd like to think there's a more satisfying explanation, and that humans are just not equipped to understand it yet.

You are talking about Zenos Paradox. If the Universe is indiscrete then its impossible to move from one place to another without teleporting because the time to travel all infinite points inbetween would be infinite...

... and it is. Every motion takes infinite time from a particular scale perspective.

To be more clear, the universe is based on ratios not discrete units.

I don't think that throwing our hands up about why existence is the way it is yields any utility in particular. That we don't understand the nature of causality, if anything, suggests that we should try to arrive to a better understanding of it. The assumption that existence is the default state may or may not be true, but it doesn't provide any new information when accepted on its face, and is only superior to creation assumptions by means of dodging the problem of sequence that classic creation myths pose, otherwise it remains just as baseless a speculation.

If someone came to you saying that an invisible unicorn was speaking to them and controlling every aspect of their lives, wouldnt that be schizophrenia?

And lets say that you are that believer of invisible unicorns, but lets say you dont think that behavior is schizo because its all just a front for you to, say, launder money through your community centers and gives excuses for you to steal resources and murder people in unjust wars..then isnt that then worse than schizophrenia? Isnt that more akin to evil?
