I know what you mean, there are many in both fields which simply exist to soak up material and complain about complexity- hoping to dumb the content down for everyone else as well. These types are best suited in engineering but some slip through the cracks and make it into the math/phys pool. Luckily, they will be wed out eventually and they will simply give up. They probably 'like' math and phys because they like the 'oh look cool stars' or 'haha i can find x given some form f(x)=0 and x is real.'
>>11329144never heard anyone use 'matrix math' before but yes linear algebra is important for QM and tensor calculus is important for general relativity. also, grow acustomed to the notion of a matrix being a representation of a linear operator. this fact is rarely ever touched on in shitty uni classes I had but its important to grasp this way of thinking early on
