So planes are more than 100 years old tech. Why they still aren't available for common man to own?

Because people in general can't be trusted with powerful machines.
Imagine the people that don't put enough fuel in their cars flying planes around.
What is stopping flying cars etc is they need to be fully automated.
Imagine the police trying to catch someone in a plane making a getaway.

this, getting a piloting license and hours of skill, maintenance per flight hour, having a place to keep it in, fuel costs, needing an airport or other conveniently sized place to take off and land from, it's a huge hassle

Drones are the poor mans avenue to experience flight. Let us also not forget that plane travel is cheap and fast and nearly universal in its availability

Actuve Duty AF officer here.

Because the reality of the situation is that about 20 to 15% of the population has the appropriate cognitive ability to pilot a vehicle safely. The military statistically recruits those with an IQ of about 105 or more to fly aircraft... at a minimum.
