in physics you learn equations and relationships and USE math to solve problems. You might need to take some math courses to help you, but you're not interested in learning ABOUT math. Math is simply a tool. (yes There are some physics PhD students who take the more abstract stuff, but even then that's just to help you understand math papers and I don't think that's what your friend is talking about)
in math, you LEARN math. It's different. You're more concerned with learning the language and structure of mathematics and writing proofs. You'll take entire courses without calculating a single value. Completely different type of math skills.
