A person might be fairly talented at math, having worked enthustiastically in HS with his precalc, thereafter finding himself in Calc 1 in the first semester of college, breezing through while he's watching his peers struggle like hell. He did OK on the exam, but not great. He does not think much of it because he was such a slacker. He'll do better in Calc 2 he thinks to himself. Next semester starts and he continues slacking like before, although it is a little harder to follow the class. The signs of trouble creeps so slowly through the semester that he has trouble realizing how far behind he is. At some point in the second half of the semester there are things in the lecture notes he doesn't understand shit of. This is when he freaks out and finally understand what a fool he has been.
Another person might have had such an extremely bad background in precalc when entering college that he barely manages to pass calc 1.This gives him a huge disadvantage in all the following calc courses.
The person above might be a person with dyscalculia and/or dyslexia, thus struggle with the calculations and numbers that permeate most of the math in school, including precalc. If such a person has a talent for higher math, then it will not show when he is taking calclulus.
