Not sure if that is the right place, but can't find any better fitting board.

What are the main problems when it comes to finding missing people? And what could be improved, especially when it comes to people who are already missing?

Facial Recognition would work for people who went missing recently, but I can imagine that it could be problematic if the person, especially a kid, wasn't seen for years. You can't really use old pictures to find kids years later

What I meant was, we could create a database with pictures of everyone and use that with CCTV or other stuff in the future, but it wouldn't help with cases of people who are already missing, especially if they went missing years ago.

I'm doing a computer science degree and was wondering if I could find something to write my thesis on that would actually help investigators

I think one of the biggest problem is people eventually give up looking. If you got to wikipedia you can see a lish of missing people from the early 20th century to the present. Most of these people have now been legally declared dead. In that case nobody is really looking and even if they are chances are slim. A good example of this is Tara Calico.

A main problem is that in some places, there is a certain amount of time has to pass before an adult can be reported missing. Unfortunately, the later you start looking, the lower chances you have of finding the person. All this could be fixed if everyone was forced to have government tracking chips installed in their bodies.
