It's really useful for data analysis, and can also do a fair bit of fast computation (depending on the type of computation). FORTRAN is still used, but C/C++ is more useful and widely used to my understanding.
But take what i say with a grain of salt. I'm still in the university bubble.
Matlab is a piece of junk though. and if you learn Python you'll be able to understand Matlab well enough that you can learn it fairly quickly.
