My criticism is not about statistics and shit but about the coorp bullshit. You know there are a lot of people talking about machine learning and shit ... but few guys in this field seem to be interested in understanding how all these things work. It seem to be just a profitable meme.

You're alright but you know... which is the big news about DS? You know statistics, machiner learning, applied math are legitm fields but Data science" seems to be basically revamped "business intelligence".

From my little experience, the methods used in Data Science are real products of real science, but the application of those aren't.

They just used old fashion databases in business (and still do), then hadoop and big data happened. So what to do about all this data now? Data mining for cool graphs and reports, machine learning to detect churn/fraud/clients or market behaviour patterns or predict solvency.

So yeah, it's BI but with different tools.

If you are lucky you can find projects with less boring machine learning. Automotive industry (driver safety support), manufacturing (detecting defects in production lines) and even pharmacy since it seems they need more IT guys now than chemists and people with bio sciences background.

same as any of the more practical fields, data science is plenty real but a large number of "data scientists" are just trained monkeys with little understanding of whatever tools they have learned to apply
