This... this is normal, right?
About to start 3rd year electrical engineering and I can't even remember how to do circuit analysis or transistors and shit from last semester.

I don't remember the steps for analysis systems and such. I think if I looked over it again I'd probably pick it up a bit faster but I feel like I'm going to finish the degree and know literally nothing when I get a job. I guess what I really want to know is do jobs expect you to remember everything or do they retrain you for what you need to do?

It's okay. Everyone in the field knows fresh college grads are fucking CLUELESS and are almost no better than dedicated and curious high schoolers. Nobody will expect much from you for your first year, as you'll basically be learning how to actually do engineering. You know, the part your four year education on engineering left out (the entire goddamn job).
As long as you have a good grasp of calculus, can toss together simple circuits, can read diagrams/layouts, and know how to do simple circuit analysis, you'll be fine.

We've done quite a bit on the topic but I just forget it all. For example, last semester we did a lot of circuit design using BJTs to make a power regulator and designing a PCB (and making it and programming it) to run an engraving machine.

this is the fate of all slightly above average intelligence people. They skate through their 1st and 2nd year at college and then their 3rd year comes around and they realize they never properly learned how to learn and that pure intuition and intelligence is no longer going to cut it. Many such cases.

I have in person witnessed a doctor skimming page 1 of a google scholar search before giving "informed advice" to a patient. They are some of the least informed people with respect to physiology and nutrition you could talk to.

my TA for organic chem told me this (that coming back a year later, he didn't remember many things immediately but it came back quicker on review than the first time), and it's big fuckin relief because at the end of the semester it's exactly how I felt, like I hadn't retained just about anything

yeah, well what do you do. The biggest annoyance I have in EE at the moment is I don't know what the fuck people actually do in the workforce. Sure, learning all this stuff is kinda fun but it's not clear how this is applied to a real job.

Fun fact anon: when you take a class, you're not expected to really learn how to do anything in that class. You're expected to learn that the key ideas of the class exist so that you can look them up later.
When you finish a 300s level class, what that means is that you should have mastered the 200s level concepts. The 300s level concepts are really not meant to be ingrained in you yet. That's why your difficult courses are called "introduction to X."

I'm currently a senior, on my final year before grad school. I can't speak for what your experience will be like, but my last year, I started getting into the fundamentals of electrical engineering. Electromagnetics, solid state physics, quantum physics, that kind of shit. I don't remember how a lot of shit works but I can generally re-derive it on the fly.

For example, in my third year, during an exam, I completely blanked on some transistor or another, I forget which kind. I re-derived the behavior using stuff from my electromagnetics class.

I find that where I am now, getting ready to graduate, I generally have a feel for how things should behave. Usually, with the exception of topics that I have recently been introduced to, I can derive my way to where I need to be from a general starting point.

I no longer remember formulas or whatever, I just practice manipulating the fundamentals until I get where I want to go.
