Is "Linear Algebra Done Right" by Sheldon Axler a good book? Are determinants that bad that they should be exiled to the end of the book? Is "Linear Algebra Done Wrong" a better book or it's just ironic shitposting?

It's a fine book. Determinants are fine but unnecessary and unmotivated in an introductory course on vector spaces and linear maps. One should consider them in the context of multilinear algebra or of differential forms. Determinants aren't bad to learn though. Linear algebra done wrong is fine too, but if you want determinants where they're normally put and you want axler level rigor you'd probably prefer hoffman and kunze.

Thanks for the reply.

I wanted to learn some linear algebra mainly in preparation for doing elementary analysis/calculus with several variables. How much linear algebra will I really need for that? Will the material covered by Axler be enough or do I need some other book?

Well then you'll want determinants because of Jacobians. I forgot about that, that's another important place for determinants.
Probably don't use axler. You won't need an incredibly theoretical text, LADW should be fine.
But honestly I don't really know what kind of linear algebra you'll be using. The first few sections of Spivak's Calculus on Manifolds might be more relevant (one of them is just a short crash course of the linear algebra he needs you to know, which will be the same for any multivariable analysis course. think his first chapter is just multivariable analysis stuff.) PDFs easily found online.

So I'm better off relying on a calculus book that tries to be self-contained and explains the linear algebra I need to know? That makes things easier I guess.
