So im in my first year of ME and having second thoughts. Its a 5 years masters program, and has the option of choosing business-data analytics, which i find rather attractive considering pay. However , I found out i dont particularly enjoy most ME sublects , but rather prefer math and software (focus on financial/business applications). If i stay ME i ll pretty much see calc 1-3 diff eq, lin alg ,numerical analysis and statistics, some basic programming and data structures. Thoughts?

Look at the jobs your degree prepares you for and what you'll do in those jobs. Or look at the research if that is that is what you're going to do. A lot of the undergrad work in the sciences are to make you a generalist moderately prepared for anything. Over half you'll never see again perhaps. Maybe switching majors will also prepare you for jobs you like more IDK but look at the jobs for sure. Also look at what you enjoy doing on your own and if that is in line with your major and career goals.

I like coding but some of my classes in CS that were pure coding and concept were still a drag. Some of your classes are going to suck but don't switch careers because you don't like some classes.

The alternative will be spent optimizing and correlating large financial software packages with market conditions.

I think the latter is more along the 5-year masters abstract degree track

Can you get your BS in Mechanical Engineering and then do something else for your masters? Undergrad in ME will be plenty of math experience for any graduate degree, mathematics included.

If you are good at math, like programming, and think like an engineer you could get your graduate degree in cryptography. Not very related to ME, I suppose.

My advise would be to try to take classes or electives in ME that let you practice these other skills you have a passion for.

For example, you should learn matlab or python. These can be applied to ME but require other sets of skills.

thoughts on what? You said you don't like ME subjects, so why consider it? You need to research CompE and EE to see which ones you like the most. EE deals with more circuits, power, dsp, op-amp design etc, whereas a CompE will typically have more programming and hardware related electives (an EE can do these as well). CS doesn't deal with any of the hardware that an EE will design, its programming heavy and more related to computer architecture. From the looks of your post you will probably enjoy more CS with more emphasis on data analytics or data science. Also, if you're in the US and you do decide to do an engineering degree, remember that you need a BS from an ABET accredited school to do you FE and eventually take your PE (so doing a masters without the BS will hinder you here). If you're not based in the US disregard that last sentence as its irrelevant.

This is just blatantly false. ME's take some semesters of calculus, linear algebra, and then a probability class. You know barely any mathematics.

mate you are a fucking retard. engineering majors are exposed to basic applied math classes like calc 1-3 and ODE's

they don't have any experience in real proof-based theoretical math like analysis, abstract algebra and topology to prepare them for a grad degree in math.
