Overall cancer death rate fell 26% in the US between 1991 and 2015, so the new treatments do end up helping each time they're developed. You just don't hear much about them after the initial press release on the exciting research finding that kicks the process off because it's not as much clickbait potential to write an article about the details of how people are getting their specially tailored cancer treatments on a daily basis currently.

Big pharma loves chronic diseases, it means you’ll have to take the medicine until you die. Curing a disease is not profitable, hence this is why there has been no major development of new antibiotics.

But on the flipside, the big insurance companies hate paying out for long term chronic illness with hard to predict costs. Plus there are all the government run health systems in Europe, that are usually looking for ways to cut costs. This study did come out of the UK after all. No reason those countries can't directly fund cures for chronic illnesses.
